Salopian beers have a distinct style, which has come about by trying to cater to the catholic taste of the British beer drinker. The malt, water, yeast and hops used are always sourced from the same suppliers and the beers produced will naturally show similar characteristics. However market forces also dictate how beer flavour should be, particularly with respect to bitterness and flavour.
There is a common misconception that small brewers beers are ‘hoppy’ and therefore bitter – in some cases unpleasantly so. Our policy has always been that the general drinking public does not like an excessively bitter beer, but appreciates balanced hop aroma and flavour. Therefore all Salopian beers are brewed to give good hop character, usually without being very malty, but with a good balance between body (ie sweetness) and bitterness. The aim is to make them easy to drink and therefore sell well!
